Edmonton police investigating ‘suspicious’ fire at Whyte Avenue bar

EDMONTON—Arson detectives are investigating after a fire broke out at a Whyte Avenue bar early Monday morning.
Edmonton Fire Rescue spokesperson Maya Filipovic said firefighters responded to a blaze at 5:05 a.m. It affected dance bar Club 82 and music venue The Forge at 105 Street and 82 Avenue.
Eight crews arrived on the scene five minutes later and the fire was declared under control at 7:10 a.m.
Filipovic said neighbouring business Queen Donair sustained smoke damage, but no one was in the building at the time.
Some firefighters were assessed for smoke inhalation on scene, but no one was hospitalized.

An Edmonton Police Service spokesperson said officers responded around 6 a.m. and arson unit detectives entered the building later Monday morning to conduct initial investigations.
Police are calling the fire suspicious.
Officers have reduced traffic to one lane in each direction while detectives investigate, and are urging motorists to use other routes.
EPS is asking anyone with information about the fire to come forward.
